It tears the heart to discover a fellow creature gone too soon, particularly when it's a bird for we bird lovers. I, too, treat the small feathery body with reverence and deep respect as I lay it to rest.
This was such a tender piece. There is so much beauty in watching these glorious creatures live, but there is also so much beauty in participating in the beauty of their passing. My kids and I have often had little funerals for the mice and birds we have either happened upon or have been unable to save, and there is something magical about wrapping and caring for their frail bodies, gently covering them with dirt, and whispering words of love to them.
Hard to write anything through the tears of sorrow for those innocent beings who pass too early. Yet death is part of life and you show us how to cope with that stunning truth. Thank you.
I loved this story, was pulled by it and had a tear while reading it. Thank you. I found an Avero floating in my fountain a few days ago. I picked him up and held his cold body in my hand. I love these sweet little birds and felt heart broken. I found a burial place and a few rose petals to line his dirt tomb, covered him up and whispered my goodbyes. Such is our role in comforting other creatures and loving them. We are all brothers and sisters.
Thank you for this. I've also been communing with the lost ones more and more lately, letting them know they matter, uttering my sadness. I have been teaching my daughter as well, which she's taken to like a bird takes to air. We lay them down with tenderness and regret. This is such a sacred act, my friend.
Heartbreaking, as we watch the young in our world stumble into, and sometimes out from life. We do all we can to ensure their safety but then they must fly into their futures. It’s a beautiful photo and honors that young life.
What a beautiful bird. he colors are amazing. Sad that it did not make it but that is all part of life and death as they say. We help the ones we can to survive and in the case of the ones that are not going to live you have done the proper thing in a respectful burial. Thanks for sharing this piece and I look forward to the others ou have written. It gives me a sense of being there with you on your adventures. Thank you David.
Thank you.🌻

The alter of an innocent—built by one human’s kindness and compassion. Sweet travels little one may your wings dress the evening sky.
It’s rough out there for a bird. This one was commemorated wonderfully at least.
This is beautiful. Might I suggest you submit it to Narratively Academy's "Mini Flash Essay Contest: Tell Us About an Act of Love"?
